Many of our readers have asked us the question: “How much FPS does the PS5 have?” The question behind this, of course, is whether the PS5 can play games at 120 FPS. We have a more detailed answer for you.
Sony promises 4K graphics with up to 120 FPS with the PlayStation 5. Theoretically, even 8K graphics are possible. First and foremost, however, the new PS5 is designed for stable playback with 4K graphics and 60 FPS. However, we explain what so-called 120 Hz gaming is all about, what requirements your television or monitor must meet in order to be able to play 120 Hz games and how you can find out whether your television supports 120 Hz you in this article.
PS5: What is 120Hz gaming?
Especially fast games, such as shooters or racing games, benefit greatly from smooth action. That’s why the game developers rely on ever faster frame rates, because more FPS (frames per second) means a smoother picture and thus faster reactions and a better gaming experience. Nowadays 60 FPS is standard.
But the new consoles go one step further and even enable up to 120 FPS. For every frame in a standard PS4 game, you’re now effectively seeing at least four frames on the PS5. Details in the game can be displayed much more precisely and you can react faster.
However, there are still disadvantages with a frame rate of 120 FPS. Despite the graphical capabilities, the games often have to reduce the resolution. The dynamic resolution ensures that the resolution is adjusted depending on the scene and is therefore not consistently reduced.
A monitor or television with a refresh rate that matches the frame rate of the game is important for 120 Hz gaming. The monitor or television should therefore support a refresh rate of at least 120 Hz or even more. This is the only way that the screen can display everything in sync with every frame from the game.
What is the difference between 120Hz and 120FPS?
Hz (Hertz) indicates how often the TV or monitor screen refreshes. That refresh rate is an essential ingredient, however most screens stop at 60Hz. There are now models that can handle up to 120 Hz. Gaming monitors in particular are known for a higher refresh rate. There are actually models with up to 360 Hz, but 144 Hz or 240 Hz are common here.
FPS (frames per second) is the number of frames per second that the PS5 can produce. This number can be locked or fully unlocked to allow for higher frame rates.
What are the requirements for 120Hz gaming?
There are now many different gaming monitors on the market that support 120 Hz or even more. With televisions, however, things are a little different. Especially with 4K televisions, there are only a few that also support 120 Hz. Only the latest models are currently capable of bringing the 120Hz refresh rate to the screen at just over 1080p.
Some manufacturers such as LG, Samsung or Sony have launched models that support 120 Hz. This is the case with LG’s flagship OLED TVs, Samsung’s QLED topper and of course new models from Sony, the maker of the PlayStation 5. Unfortunately, not all manufacturers are willing to integrate 120 Hz.
The most important factors for a television to be able to support 120 Hz are, firstly, a responsive panel in order to react as quickly, and secondly, at least one HMDI 2.0 connection in order to be able to process the signal from the PS5. By the way, HDMI 2.1 is mandatory for games at 4K and 120 FPS.
Before making a purchase, it’s worth checking the TV’s spec sheet and looking for variable refresh rates and a low-latency mode.

How do I find out if a TV or monitor supports 120 Hz?
If you want to find out whether your TV or monitor supports 120 Hz and has such an input, you can, for example, connect your PC or laptop via HDMI and run a game with the highest frame rate. Also, another option is to visit a dedicated refresh rate checking website.

There is one more important thing. I’m talking about security. A VPN for PC or laptop can help protect your data from online attacks. This is how you get 120 FPS on the PS5
When “Performance Mode” is selected in the PS5 preferences, the PS5 will try to force the highest possible FPS. The resolution usually suffers as a result. Of course, that only applies to games that make a choice between performance and quality. Unfortunately, this is currently the closest thing to selecting the frame rate on the PS5. Therefore, you should select “Performance mode” in the preferences. This is how you achieve the highest possible frame rate on the PS5.
“Resolution Mode”, on the other hand, prefers resolution and enables 4K resolution. But here too, this is only possible in games that also have a selection for this setting.
All PS5 games that support 120 FPS
Currently, only the native PS5 versions support 120 FPS. Many of these games allow playing at 120 FPS via an FPS Boost.
